How to Find the Right Program for ICF Coaching

ree

When I first thought about becoming a coach, I was overwhelmed. There were so many programs, fancy names, and promises everywhere. I didn’t know where to start. Maybe you’re feeling the same right now—and that’s okay!

The truth is, coaching is a profession built on credibility and trust. That’s why the International Coaching Federation (ICF) is the place most coaches turn to. Their accreditation is recognized worldwide, and it’s the stamp that says, “This coach knows what they’re doing.”

I began my own coaching journey back in 2018, and let me be honest—it has been nothing short of transformational. But it wasn’t easy. It required hard work, long hours of practice, self-reflection, and a lot of learning. And yet, every challenge along the way shaped me into a better coach and a stronger person.

So, how do you pick the right program to start your own journey? Here’s what worked for me (and countless others):

1. Define Your Goals

Before you start searching, get clear on what you want.

  • Do you want to become a professional coach?

  • Or are you adding coaching skills to your leadership or HR role?

  • How much time and money can you commit right now?

Clarity on your goals makes choosing a program much easier.

2. Know the Levels

Think of ICF training like school:

  • Level 1 (ACC): Your foundation, 60+ hours, great for beginners.

  • Level 2 (PCC): Deeper learning, 125+ hours, for those who want to go further.

  • MCC: The “professor level”—after years of coaching experience.

Most people start with ACC and then move toward PCC.

3. Check Accreditation

Not every program out there is officially recognized. Always look for ICF Level 1 or ICF Level 2 programs. You can even search directly on the ICF Training Program Search Service
